The Moberly Chamber of Commerce: what it costs to join and what you get

The Moberly Area Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit, in its own words "separate from the City of Moberly or Randolph County" and funded by dues. It is over 80 years old and has been at 211 W. Reed Street since the 1980s. Three staff.

211 West Reed Street, Moberly · 660-263-6070 · chamber@moberlychamber.com · 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays

Executive Director is Maranda Dollich. The Tourism Specialist — who handles the visitors bureau and tourism grants — is reachable at tourism@moberlychamber.com.

What it costs to join

The dues schedule is not on the membership page. It is inside the application form. Here it is.

Civic organisations, non-profits and individuals — $90 a year
Retail, manufacturing, sales, service, hospitality — from $160, on an employee ladder
Licensed professionals — $200
Daycares — $200
Property management — $250
Schools — $350
Local media — $420 · Corporate media — $610
Banks — based on total deposits, minimum $1,000
Public utilities — $1,300 · Hospitals — $1,400

The employee ladder for retail, manufacturing, sales, service and hospitality:
1 to 15 employees — $160
16 to 40 — $285
41 to 80 — $395
81 to 120 — $500
121 and up — $610

So a two-person shop downtown joins for $160 a year, and a non-profit for $90.

The benefit most members miss

The Chamber Benefit Plan is a health insurance option for members with 2 to 50 employees, with life, vision and dental alongside it. For a small employer trying to offer coverage, that is worth more than everything else on the benefits list combined. Ask about it before you dismiss the dues.

The rest: referrals to callers and newcomers, a listing in the online directory, your business cards and flyers on display in the Chamber lobby, event sponsorship, exposure on social media and in the newsletter, the community calendar, Business After Hours networking, a member-to-member discount programme, a job board, ribbon cuttings, mailing lists, coffee chats and marketing training.

And if you just walk in, the office hands out city and state maps, travel guides, the Chamber directory, a list of member restaurants, Parks & Rec visitor guides, a landlord listing, and an Amish map.

The directory

Searchable, and sorted into 37 categories — architects, attorneys, automotive, beauty, business services, childcare, cleaning, construction and contractors, dentistry, drive-ins and theatres, education, emergency services, entertainment, farming and land services, financial services, fitness, funeral and monument services, government, healthcare, hotels and event spaces, industry, insurance, manufacturing and distribution, marketing, media and broadcasting, non-profits, public utilities, real estate, recreation, rental property management, restaurants, retail, senior centres and nursing homes, technology, veterinary and pet care, and worship.

It is the closest thing Moberly has to a complete business list.

What the Chamber runs

Junk Junktion in September — the largest tourism event in the county, over 100 vendors and around 15,000 people.
Mid-Missouri’s Christmas Festival on the first Saturday in December, with the parade on Reed Street.
The Annual Banquet, the Chamber’s primary fundraiser, in May.
The Employer Showcase — and note it is explicitly not a job fair. It connects area students with employers. Free, but you must register in advance.
State of Our Community, a fall luncheon at MACC with legislative updates from state, county and city officials.
Moberly’s Hidden Train Hunt — a map, participating businesses, and a painted wooden train hidden in each.
Plus a job fair, the car cruise, the annual events meeting, the Duck Dash & Truck Bash, Gus Macker and Chamber trips.

Ribbon cuttings are scheduled through the Chamber and appear on the community calendar. Opening a business? Call 660-263-6070 and ask for one.

One thing the Chamber does not have

People ask about a leadership programme, a young professionals group and a Chamber scholarship. We looked, and the Moberly Chamber publishes none of the three. The nearest is Leadership Northeast, which belongs to a different organisation — Missouri Northeast — and is linked from MAEDC’s site, not the Chamber’s. Do not go to 211 W. Reed asking about it.

Getting on the community calendar

You do not have to be a member. The event just has to be in Randolph County. Fill in the form on the Chamber’s site, and it goes out on Chamber Chat every Monday.

The calendar is public. Our own annual events guide is built from it.
