Veterinarians, emergency animal care and the shelter in Moberly

Two veterinary practices serve Moberly. Between them they cover dogs, cats, horses and cattle during business hours. Neither is open overnight, and there is no after-hours emergency veterinarian anywhere in Randolph County. If your animal has an emergency at 2 a.m., you are driving to Columbia. Read the emergency section below before you need it.

Veterinary clinics in Moberly

Green Hills Veterinary Clinic

1709 E. Urbandale Drive, Moberly
660-263-9797
greenhillsvetclinic.com · Facebook

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Closed Saturday and Sunday

This is the mixed practice. Green Hills treats small animals and also does bovine and equine work — if you have cattle, horses, goats or other livestock in Randolph County, this is your in-town option. Clients report hauling in by trailer.

Veterinarians: Dr. Cliff Miller, Dr. Laura Moon, Dr. Jody Perry, Dr. Anna Sayre, Dr. Hailey Mann. The clinic’s team page is the place to check before you assume a particular vet is still there.

Sugar Creek Veterinary Services

1000 W. Highway 24, Moberly
660-263-2636
sugarcreekvetservices.com · Facebook

Hours vary by day and the clinic publishes them one day at a time. Call.

Small animal only. Wellness exams, vaccinations, in-house lab diagnostics, digital radiology, routine and non-routine surgery, dental care, allergy and dermatology, diabetic testing, pharmacy, nutritional counseling, senior pet care, and humane euthanasia.

Veterinarians: Dr. Randy Miller (owner), Dr. Erin M. Morris, Dr. Lauren Quaney.

The clinic takes emergencies during business hours and refers out after hours.

One thing that trips people up: online directories still list a "Vater Veterinary Clinic" at 1000 W. Highway 24 with the same phone number. That is the same practice under its former name, not a separate clinic. There is nothing at that address but Sugar Creek.

Emergencies after hours

There is no 24-hour or after-hours emergency veterinary hospital in Randolph County. Both Moberly clinics refer to the same two places in Columbia, roughly 40 minutes south.

Horton Animal Hospital – Discovery

3609 Endeavor Avenue, Columbia
573-777-3609
hortondiscovery.com

The hospital states it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and instructs you to call ahead rather than simply show up — and to call again from the parking lot when you arrive.

Call before you leave Moberly. Overnight staffing at emergency hospitals in mid-Missouri has been unstable, and a 40-minute drive to a closed door is the worst outcome there is. One phone call settles it.

University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center

900 E. Campus Drive, Columbia
vhc.missouri.edu

Small animal emergencies: 573-882-4589. This is the teaching hospital, and it takes the hard cases — specialists, advanced imaging, surgery a general practice cannot do. Note the limit: new small animal emergency patients are accepted 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Outside that window, call first.

Large animal emergencies: 573-882-6857, and that line is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For a horse or cow in trouble at 3 a.m., MU is the answer — it is the only round-the-clock large animal emergency service in this part of the state.

Put both numbers in your phone now, under "Vet Emergency."

Moberly Animal Shelter and Animal Control

153 W. Outer Road, Moberly
660-833-7330
moberlymoanimalshelter@gmail.com
City of Moberly Animal Control Division

Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
After-hours animal emergencies — severely injured or severely aggressive animals only — 660-263-0346. That is the police department line.

Read this part carefully: the Moberly Animal Shelter takes dogs. Only dogs. No cats, no wildlife, and no owner surrenders. There is no humane society in Randolph County and no local shelter that takes cats. If you have found a stray cat, or you can no longer keep one, the shelter is not the answer and you will need to look outside the county.

Adopting a dog

Adoption fee: $275. That covers spay or neuter, heartworm test, fecal, deworming, all required vaccines, monthly preventative (Sentinel) and a microchip — which is most of what you would pay a clinic for separately in the first year.

The city says plainly that if you cannot pay the fee up front, they will work with you: "the end goal is to place our dogs in loving homes and we understand the initial cost to adopt may be difficult for some individuals." Ask. Do not assume you are priced out.

Puppies for Parole dogs cost the same $275 and come trained — sit, down, stay, come, leash walking, crate training, housebroken. Same fee, trained dog.

Lost your dog

Call 660-833-7330 during business hours to report it missing. Outside business hours, email a photo to moberlymoanimalshelter@gmail.com.

Getting an impounded dog back

$30 initial pickup, plus $10 per day the dog is held, plus $15 for a parvo vaccine if the dog is under six months.

Bring: proof of a rabies certificate from a licensed veterinarian, a driver’s license or photo ID, and cash or a check. Dogs are not released without payment in full.

Two things to expect. You will be issued a citation for dog at large. And if the rabies vaccine is not current, you have ten days to get it done and bring back proof, or you get a second citation. Reclaim only during Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Reporting cruelty, a bite, or a nuisance animal

Animal Control works with the police department on city ordinance violations and state law: dog-at-large complaints, nuisance complaints, sick or injured animals, cruelty complaints and dog bite reports.

Inside Moberly city limits: 660-833-7330 during business hours, 660-263-0346 after hours.
Outside city limits: the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.

Volunteers are welcome. Call 660-833-7330 first to make sure someone is there and not out on a call.

Boarding, daycare and grooming

Call ahead on all of these. Kennel hours are usually shorter than you expect and holiday weekends book out early.

Boarding and grooming. Takes dogs and cats — the name is not a joke, and in a county with no cat shelter it is worth knowing someone will board one.

Low-cost spay and neuter

A reduced-cost spay and neuter program called Paws for Prevention has been associated with the Moberly shelter. We have not been able to confirm its current status, cost or eligibility rules from a published source, so treat this as a lead rather than a fact: call the shelter at 660-833-7330 and ask.

If you know the current details — or run a program we have missed — tell us and we will put it here.

What Randolph County does not have

Stated plainly, because knowing the gap is worth as much as knowing the listings:

No after-hours emergency vet. Columbia, both species.
No cat shelter and no humane society. The city shelter is dogs only.
No wildlife intake. For injured wildlife, contact the Missouri Department of Conservation.
No owner-surrender option at the city shelter.

Hours, fees and staff change. Everything above was verified against the clinics’ and the city’s own published pages, but call before you drive. Something wrong or missing? Tell us and we will fix it.
